Introduction

A city walking tour to explore the most characteristic places in Milan.

Description

Your Milan walking tour starts at Sforza Castle, once home of the Sforza family who ruled the city and, as patrons of Michelangelo, brought us some of the world's greatest art. Together with your guide, you'll take a tour of the grounds before visiting the Castle Museum. Here you'll see the armory, admire the huge collection of art, furniture and musical instruments and, most exciting of all, Michelangelo's last great masterpiece, the Rondanini Pietà.
Back at ground level, walk till Brera district. For locals this is the heart and soul of Milan, home to its best galleries, boutique stores, bars and restaurants. Beyond the Brera district your walking tour continues to some of the city's known and unknown highlights, including the beautiful glass-domed Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and the “bone chapel”! Just a stone's throw from Milan Duomo, it's a wonder more people don't visit this tiny side chapel, decorated in human bones from an old hospital cemetery. You don't see many ossuaries these days so any visit is special, but this one is particularly so, with a beautiful 17th century fresco painted on its ceiling.
Next stop is the Milan Duomo. Your tour includes tickets to Milan Duomo rooftop terrace, with additional elevator access. Skip the line entry isn't possible here, so during the wait for the elevator, your guide will teach you the long history of The-Duomo-That-Almost-Wasn't. They'll point out different architectural styles, telling you about the 1,800 sculptures that perch atop the 135 spires; and about the gold Madonna who has become the symbol of the city.
You'll be glad for their insight when you get to see it for yourself. By far the city's most memorable visit (Da Vinci be damned), the Duomo rooftop terrace offers more eye candy than you can possibly absorb in a glance, so we'll leave you to explore in your time and at your own pace. On a sunny day, there really is nowhere more lovely to sit and enjoy Italy's famous dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing.
